Welcome

Hi. My name is Miriam (Midge Porter Design). I live and create in the rural Glenkens region of Galloway, within Scotland’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – internationally recognised as a world class environment for people and nature.

I am a creative textile designer and producer. I am passionate about supporting the Scottish and British wool trade. I also work to the motto of NATURAL – SUSTAINABLE – TRACEABLE when considering the materials I use for my business.

I create 100% wool and sheepskin (fleece lined) baby soft shoes/ booties. I enjoy working with crofters and small-scale wool producers to support and promote them, as well as being able to give my customers full traceability information.

I also work with natural and commercial dyes to create a rainbow of colours in both yarn and embroidery thread (floss) form. In addition to this I am also a cross-stitch and Blackwork embroidery designer.

I produce knitting and crochet pattern designs, and I sew a few companion craft items such as bags/ journal wallet inserts/ craft organisers.

I have been a keen multi-crafter for many years, particularly enjoying crochet, knitting and embroidery. I also dabble with patchwork, quilting and lacemaking, though I’ll happily try any craft.

I started my freelance textile design business in August 2020. I sell mainly online via my Etsy shop, on the Ravelry website, as well at Creative Art venues, Visitor centres, etc. I also host my craft and design stall at several local markets and shows within the Dumfries & Galloway region.

I have had the great pleasure of promoting and selling my products at large-scale textile shows, such as The Scottish Wool Festival (Perth), The Wool Producers Showcase (Perth), ‘Tangled’ Galashiels (Galashiels), The North East Wool Show (Newcastle), Wool.Woven.Wild Festival (Langholm), Yarndale (Skipton, N.Yorkshire), Cumbrian Wool Gathering (Nr. Kendal), and the Eden Wool Gathering (Isle of Whithorn).

I am a Proud Supporter of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere, whose three goals are CONSERVATION (promoting the preservation of wildlife, habitats, and landscape), LEARNING (supporting a better understanding of nature and global issues), and DEVELOPMENT (fostering a sustainable economy and society) here in southwest Scotland. In my spare (ahem) time I am also studying for an OU BA (Hons) Design and Innovation degree.
