Welcome

Hi. My name is Miriam (Midge Porter Design). I live and create in the rural Glenkens region of Galloway, within Scotland’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve – internationally recognised as a world class environment for people and nature.

I am a creative textile designer and producer. I am passionate about supporting the Scottish and British wool trade. I also work to the motto of NATURAL – SUSTAINABLE – TRACEABLE when considering the materials I use for my business.

I create 100% wool and sheepskin (fleece lined) baby soft shoes/ booties. I enjoy working with crofters and small-scale wool producers to support and promote them, as well as being able to give my customers full traceability information.

I also work with natural and commercial dyes to create a rainbow of colours in both yarn and embroidery thread (floss) form. In addition to this I am also a cross-stitch and Blackwork embroidery designer.

I produce knitting and crochet pattern designs, and I sew a few companion craft items such as bags/ journal wallet inserts/ craft organisers.

I have been a keen multi-crafter for many years, particularly enjoying crochet, knitting and embroidery. I also dabble with patchwork, quilting and lacemaking, though I’ll happily try any craft.

I started my freelance textile design business in August 2020. I sell mainly online via my Etsy shop, on the Ravelry website, as well at local Creative Art venues and Visitor centres. I also host my craft and design stall at several local markets and shows within the Dumfries & Galloway region.

I have had the great pleasure of promoting and selling my products at large-scale textile shows, such as The Scottish Wool Festival (Perth), The Wool Producers Showcase (Perth), ‘Tangled’ Galashiels (Galashiels), The North East Wool Show (Newcastle), Winton Wool Gathering (Nr. Edinburgh), Yarndale (Skipton, N.Yorkshire), Cumbrian Wool Gathering (Nr. Kendal), and soon at the Eden Wool Gathering (Isle of Whithorn).

I am a Proud Supporter of the Galloway and Southern Ayrshire Biosphere, whose three goals are CONSERVATION (promoting the preservation of wildlife, habitats, and landscape), LEARNING (supporting a better understanding of nature and global issues), and DEVELOPMENT (fostering a sustainable economy and society) here in southwest Scotland. In my spare (ahem) time I am also studying for an OU BA (Hons) Design and Innovation degree.

    1. Hi. I will be attending Castle Douglas market this Saturday 11-4pm. It is at the Crannog Centre next to Carlingwalk Loch. I will also be at Corsock Village Christmas Fair (at the hall) 11-3pm on Sunday. There are a few of my products also for sale in Castle Douglas at The Heart of Galloway centre at the main Car Park on Market Hill. Hope this helps! Enjoy your stay in our lovely region. Midge

      1. Hi Midge

I’m sorry to be writing this as I am keen to support small businesses but the A5 organiser is not A5 size. I assumed it would take an A5 notebook. However it does not even accommodate A5 paper as the vertical is 1.5 cms too short.
(This was to be a present for my granddaughter who loves writing in A5 notebooks.)
Can you advise on the return and refund arrangements please?

        with thanks

        Anne

      2. Good morning Anne
I am sorry that you are not happy with your order.
I just wanted to clarify that, as per the esty listing information, the organiser is A5 overall sized to fit into an A5 travellers journal or to be used as an organiser within an A5 folder/ bag, etc. It is not designed to fit an A5 notebook within in. That is why I supply it with a smaller notebook with it. I can see how the listing may not be clear and so I will update that for the future.
Although I do not normally issue refunds, unless an item if faulty, I would rather you were happy with your purchase. I would like to reassure you that I shall firstly fully refund you via the etsy site and secondly I would like you to just keep the organiser and maybe you could use it as a secondary gift for your granddaughter?
I hope that this is a satisfactory arrangement.
Apologies once again for your disappointment and I hope that you enjoy your visit to our lovely region.
        Best wishes,
        Midge

      3. Thank you Midge. Really sad this didn’t work out. Wonder if the one you sent was perhaps smaller than your usual ones?

It’s a kind offer for us to keep it and it is lovely (the belted Galloway are a special memory) but if you would like me to return it I absolutely will do so.

        best regards and thanks

        Anne
